What is the heart, the very core of the Christian faith? Jesus answered this question in response to a query by a religious leader of his time, a Pharisee who was a lawyer. We see the incident in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 22, and verses beginning at 34. His question was: "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" Mark, in his Gospel, reports the question as follows: "Which commandment is the most important of all?" (Mark 12:28b).

Though the scribe asked only for one commandment, Jesus, in his reply, gave two! He quoted from the Books of Moses (The Law or Torah), Deuteronomy 6:4, and Leviticus 19:18, and summarized the whole Biblical faith through these two Scriptures. If I may take the liberty to paraphrase Jesus, he taught that the essence of the Biblical faith is that we must love God with the whole of our being AND love our neighbor as ourselves.

In both his teachings and the teachings of his Apostles, this truth is made more vivid and clear. John the Beloved Apostle wrote towards the end of his life these words:

"If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother." (1 John 4:20-21)

If we are the genuine disciples of the one who hung on the cross and prayed for those who impaled him there, then we must love all and serve all.

This is what motivates the entire ministry of Good News for India. We serve ALL without regard for caste or creed because our Lord Jesus commanded us to do so. Will you please pray that we will ever remain true to this call even when those we serve rise against us and persecute us?

May the Lord bless you!
